The ones sticking around to watch the bands regardless of how shit they were. The ones that lend out a guitar or and amp when another band is in need.

Most of this article is the epitome of every show I've ever played or been to when I was younger where there were dudes twice my age talking shit about the kids at the show and how young the the kids in the (my) band were. I've heard stuff before playing shows from the "elite" like "there is no way these kids can know metal" and "who let these little fucks in" ... And then we'd play our set and blow their minds. They'd come up and say they weren't expecting that! It kind of made us reverse rolls. We'd suddenly be suggesting bands to them instead of them giving us the same tired Metallica/Megadeath spiel.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564185814095508762.post-31260659818998690882013-08-11T10:07:02.137-07:002013-08-11T10:07:02.137-07:00Granted, my friend wasn't around back in the &...Granted, my friend wasn't around back in the "day," but I don't think he meant violent as in, people physically harming each other, just that there is a certain element of what he would deem "lameness" in the way some younger people mosh. Is he correct? No, I don't think so at all.

But you're right, no one wants to get hurt. A bruise here or there is probably perfectly acceptable and harmless - unless you happen to have a blood disorder like hemophilia or something - and for some people is probably a goal, so they would have something to impress the ladies with.

There are no rules for circle pits except the rules that are fabricated by the society that takes part in them.

Good response Anon, thanks for reading!Orionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06434070510965701360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564185814095508762.post-22984451116007300242013-08-11T07:11:49.923-07:002013-08-11T07:11:49.923-07:00I started attending thrash metal & HC gigs in ...I started attending thrash metal & HC gigs in the mid 1980s and the pits started to get violent in my area around 1990 only because of assholes.

Who the hell wants to get hurt? No wonder by the late 1990s the "No mosh" slogan was upheld at shows.

Circle pits are supposed to be violent? Then your friend must have thought it was cool back in the day when gangs like the Suicidals would demolish anyone they didn't know, including stabbing them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564185814095508762.post-4270487565195666812012-11-13T21:02:05.134-08:002012-11-13T21:02:05.134-08:00You know Robert, I AM a tough guy! My chromium-aluminum-alloy reinforced bones, oil-modified tendons and pneumatically enhanced ligaments are the stuff of heroic tales and Norse fables. I've enclosed my sweat pores with a layer of carbon-nano-sheeting just so that when I sweat (which I almost always am because I'm just so tough) my body's liquids are trapped between my genetically superior chassis and technologically advanced exoskeleton to create a padded layer impenetrable by the sharpest blades and lethal munitions. Next Thursday I am getting surgery to remove my tear ducts so that I will never feel emotion. I'll let you know how the operation goes.

Anyway, perhaps the subtlety of the comment and context wasn't clear enough in regards to that comment. I was explaining that even though I am advocating a sense of inclusiveness and openness to the Heavy Metal underbelly, we should not forget that there should always exist, and always will exist and certain level of exclusivity amongst us. We will know when someone's heart isn't there and I say we proceed to remove them from the ranks with the same zeal afforded any traitor throughout history. They will fear our passion, they will fear our resolve but most of all they will fear being found out for the insincerity they try and sneak by us. For them, it is a game they enjoy.Orionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06434070510965701360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564185814095508762.post-7434002436324936262012-11-13T13:09:45.199-08:002012-11-13T13:09:45.199-08:00I actually liked the story at first, but you lost ...I actually liked the story at first, but you lost me completely when you said this:
"We will know those that don't want to be there and for those unlucky souls I say we make an example of them by ripping and tearing them to shreds so that they are too scared to come back"

Wow, you must be really hardcore huh?Robert Derrynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564185814095508762.post-69592961222751111762012-11-13T11:32:03.797-08:002012-11-13T11:32:03.797-08:00Good article I think. It's also true that there is more of an obsession with aesthetics than metal itself. People tend to drift towards apparel and consume themselves with it instead of the music (the art form behind the patches/clothes).

Our generation experienced the start of the digital media craze in the late 90's/early 2000's so we never really were able to experience the labor of love that it was to be into metal. When growing up, we didn't blindly spend all our hard earned cash on music since we were given the opportunity to sample everything via Internet. I know my place, and I am certainly not a veteran of the scene and will never pretend to be through emulation of what was done 20-30 years ago. I personally have more respect for someone that was or is involved in the most nauseating music scene of all time more than someone that can accomplish everything they have and know regarding metal through eBay and downloading.Tobiasnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564185814095508762.post-48151544806150238172012-11-13T10:33:50.458-08:002012-11-13T10:33:50.458-08:00Looks like someone is upset that they didn't t...Looks like someone is upset that they didn't think of this first. Grow up. I'm not claiming to be "more metal" than anyone out there. I'm saying that those kids that are there and enjoying the show are the breath and life of an aging and cynical metal scene and that those cynical and pessimistic old-timers or veterans or "elite" - whatever you want to call them - owe whatever support we can give to these kids because they were us at some time and we should be trying to bring kids that really enjoy the music into the fold and make shows and hangouts a fun and enjoyable place to be.

Yeah, I do enjoy analyzing the music, I do enjoy looking at thinks in a more in depth manner but in the end, I love the music just as much as they do, my criticism doesn't overpower the primitive feeling that builds up inside me when I hear an awesome riff.

I guess you believe that if milk has turned sour, you should still drink it just because you like milk. They just listen to the tunes and enjoy them instead of over analyzing the music like you do and trying to make some big statement about it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
